Programme
Haydn Piano Trio in D Major, Hob. XV:24
Felix Mendelssohn Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, Op. 49
Shostakovich Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor, Op. 67
The programme opens with Haydn’s Piano Trio in D Major, Hob. XV:24 (1795), displaying his customary wit while departing into a richer orchestration and rhetoric. This is the gateway to Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, Op. 49 (1839), a Romantic masterpiece famed for its lyrical beauty and intensity, brilliant interplay carrying us from sweeping melodies to an exhilarating finale. Written during World War II after the death of a close friend, Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor, Op. 67 (1944) concludes the concert with profound emotional depth.
